IIHF ESPORT FAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2020

The 2020 IIHF Esports Fan Championship was a global tournament played in EA SPORTS™ NHL™ 20 from May 2020 to June 2020. It was the first ever esports event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

The tournament served as a replacement for the 2020 Ice Hockey World Championship in Switzerland that was cancelled due to COVID-19. In 16 qualifiers the 16 virtual national teams of the countries qualified for the 2020 Ice Hockey World Championship were determined.

Through the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final, Finland won the first IIHF esports title. The tournament was played purely online and broadcasted live on five different Twitch channels in five different languages.

Open qualification | 15.05 – 22.05.2020
- 2 open online qualification tournaments for each country. One on Xbox and one on PlayStation.
Playoffs | 29.05. – 07.06.2020
- 16 teams seeded into a single knockout bracket starting with the round of 16.
- Every match-up is decided by 4 individual matches, 2 on Xbox and 2 on PlayStation. Alle 4 scores get added up and the overall score decides the winner. If there is a tie after 4 games, the match goes into double-overtime where both console start a new game at the same time. The fastest goal wins the series.
