2022 IIHF eWORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2022 IIHF eWorld Championship was a global tournament played in EA SPORTS™ NHL™ 22 from June 2022 to July 2022. It was the successor contest to the 2020 IIHF Esports Fan Championhip. Organizer was the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

22 qualifiers for 22 member associations of the IIHF were hold to determine the respective national teams. 18 national teams started in the Group Stage of the 2022 IIHF eWorld Championship. After the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, Finland was able to obtain the trophy – as in 2020.

The tournament was played purely online and broadcasted live on four different Twitch channels in four different languages. According to IIHF president Luc Tardif, the 2022 IIHF eWorld Championship was „the start of a new program of esports offerings in the future“.

Format:

  • Participants
    • 18 national teams with 2 players each, 1 x Xbox & 1 PlayStation
  • Open qualification | 16.06. – 29.06.2022
    • 2 open online qualification tournaments for each country. One on Xbox and one on PlayStation.
  • Group stage | 02. & 03.07.2022
    • 18 teams divided in 4 groups of 4 and 5 teams.
    • Each team plays each team twice.
  • Playoffs | 09.07. – 17.07.2022
    • Top two teams of each group got seeded into a single knockout bracket starting with the quarter-finals.
    • Every match-up is decided by 4 individual matches, 2 on Xbox and 2 on PlayStation. Alle 4 scores get added up and the overall score decides the winner. If there is a tie after 4 games, the match goes into double-overtime where both console start a new game at the same time. The fastest goal wins the series.
